I would really be remiss if I didn't post about this...
A woman I know from "the boards," Danica Martinez, developed leukemia as a result of her chemo treatment for breast cancer (crazy, but true).
She is the single mother of 3 kids and desperately needs a bone marrow transplant, but has been unable to find a match.
Now here's the cool part: ANYONE (well, anyone who hasn't had cancer) can be a bone marrow donor and the actual donation process sounds way easier than, say, giving up a kidney.
For more info on Danica and how to become a bone marrow donor, go here.

It is something I've thought about.
The link actually sucks for information on the how. It says it's safe and private. That's all.
You describe it as less then donating a kidney.
I'm getting the impression that they just maybe might be some amount of pain that most humans would find more then tolerable.
I've heard it's very painful.
That fact that all the site says is that"it's safe and private" doesn't inspire confidence.
Some people are allergic to cats, dogs, commitments.
I am allergic to excruciating pain!
Do they give you good drugs at least???
Any info will be appreciated.
The details are a little buried, but if you go to the DKMS Americas page and click on "What to expect" and then click on the 2 methods, they give you much more detail.
According, to DKMS the most common method is Peripheral Blood Stem Cell, where they extract the marrow from your blood. From the description, it sounds only slightly more complicated than just donated blood.
The other, less common method is Marrow Tissue extraction, where they actually insert a needle, etc., etc. For that one, you get good drugs, I think.
