Go here to sign a petition asking Microsoft to reduce the default margin size in Microsoft Word.
To me, this has all the hallmarks of the perfect petition:
1. It's directed at Microsoft, the company we all love to hate because of their insidious control of the software market and, thereby, much of our lives.
2. The freakin' large default margins in Word are a pet peeve of mine.
3. It's good for the environment.

I'm all for helping the enviro but what does this mean, and how does it help? Being somewhat of a computer neophyte I don't even know if this bothers me because I don't know what it is.
Just to show you my high regard for you Jen, I'll probably do it anyway,but I'd do it with greater gusto if I knew what"it" was and why "it" is bad!
It allows for more words to fit onto a page. Therefore using less paper by default.
I think this is a waste of time. One can customize margins in about 15 seconds. Computer illiteracy is not an excuse but rather sign of laziness or lack of interest. Or both.
It's not a question of laziness, it's a question of efficiency. Theree is no reason for the margins to default to be that big.
Personal responsibility comes before one has a right do demand anything from government, corporations, or neighbors. I hope all those people who signed that petition print their crap on cheap not so white flimsy paper. I also would assume that they should never type anything double spaced and also print on both sides of paper.
Margins are so big because this is what the standard dictates. It was established way before Microsoft was even a thought. They are just following the rules.
The paper doesn't have to be cheap or flimsy, but it should be post-consumer recycled. And double-sided.
But I've never heard of a standard margin of 1.25". That's part of what's always peeved me about it being the default setting.
Moreover, of course people have a right to make demands on corporations--that's what consumer capitalism is all about. Corporations are SUPPOSED to respond to consumer demands.
Computer illiteracy sometimes is just not knowing. I don't use my computer to do anything that requires margins. So since I don't use this feature of what a computer can do,why would I know about it.
Using your logic,you should know everything there is to know about computers,all the different software ever created,how to write it,how to make and fix hard drives.
That's just silly.
Bacchusuno, The computer literacy I am referring to is not being a know-it-all. I do not expect people just to know things. I do expect them to make an effort to learn when there is a need to do so. Luckily software programmers created this handy little feature called HELP. If you don’t know how to do something – look it up.
Jen, my issue with this petition is the fact that Microsoft is the villain here. I like that woman’s idea that large institutions need to change their standards for margins. That will make MS change things, not some lousy couple of thousand signatures from green activists. If Coca-Cola (definitely a villain) changed their requirements, MS would take notice. If would also create a good PR opportunity for promoting green approach.
